Coping with Grief~ Information from Community Health Center

Coping with Grief
This past week has been particularly challenging for many of us here in Connecticut and around the country as we mourn those who died in the shooting in Newtown and as we help those around us cope with the horrible tragedy. During this time, CHC has reached out to the community to provide help and resources to those who have been affected most.Dr. Tim Kearney, Chief Behavioral Health Officer, produced handouts to help parents and clinicians talk about the shooting.  The handouts for talking with children are in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

You can access these handouts on at:

http://community.chc1.com/2012/12/talking-with-children-about-the-recent-school-shooting-in-sandy-hook/

and

http://community.chc1.com/2012/12/talking-to-adults-about-the-sandy-hook-shootings-ways-to-help/

On Tuesday evening, we held a forum on coping with disaster in Danbury.  This was followed on Wednesday night, with a teleconference with Dr. Kearney, where people called in, listened to his advice on coping with the disaster and asked him questions.

You can listen to a recording of this phone call at

http://community.chc1.com/2012/12/coping-with-disaster-in-our-community/

We continue to seek new ways to better help the people of our communities in good times and in bad and we hope you will find these resources helpful.

Fall 2012

Welcome back Churchill region students, and welcome to all new students!  The Churchill Health Center is located in the “Student Personnel Center” building, right by the counseling offices and career center.  Please feel free to stop by and check it out.  Our friendly, resourceful, and well-trained staff are here to help make your next school year as healthy as possible.

State certification requirements have changed, and this will affect how we do things at the health center:

Starting this school year (2012-13) to use the health center, you will need to become a registered patient in the health center.   This means that a student who asks for non-prescription medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc. or who wants mental health therapy would need to register first.

To become a registered health center patient:

  • You complete and sign both sides of the health center registration/consent form.
  • Have a yearly well exam (physical), including height and weight, done in the health center, or provide a copy of a physical exam done by your health care provider to the health center.

Unscheduled drop-in visits to the nurse will be limited to specific times during the day.  You will still be able to schedule appointments with the nurse, nurse practitioner, or mental health therapist during any hours of operation based on availability.  There will still be staff available for emergencies anytime during our hours of operation.

If you think you may need non-prescription medications (ie. Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc) during the day, school policy allows those of you at the high school level to carry your own day’s supply if kept in the original bottle and it is not shared with friends.

The idea behind the required steps to register as a patient is to help detect problems early in your health care, but we know it adds more to the process of being seen here and it’s a significant change for us all.  If you have any questions or concerns, please ask a member of the health center staff.

Summer 2011

Hello friends of the Health Center. Hard to believe we’re facing the end of the school year this week. We made do with lots of changes this year. Highlights were our vibrant TAC students and Benefit committee that put on the 5th annual Hands for Health Benefit this past May, raising $26,000. Outstanding help from our community of supporters, making health care more accessible. We saw lots of children this year. See “who we saw” below.

As our 2010-2011 school year winds down, so does our health center. Our last day to see students will be Thursday, June 16, 2010. We will close for the summer and re-open when the new school year starts in the fall, 2011.

We hope everyone will enjoy the summer as a time to make friends, explore the world, read good books, and tend your gardens.

~The Churchill Health Center staff
